What Are We Letting Happen To Ourselves?

The debate around artificial intelligence is dominated by a familiar question: Is AI good or bad? Will it boost productivity or destroy jobs? Accelerate innovation or deepen inequality?

These questions are important — but they may be the wrong ones.

The more consequential issue is not what AI will do to the economy. It is what we are allowing it to do to us.

The Real Risk Is Cognitive, Not Technological

Much of the public discussion around AI risk focuses on displacement: which roles will be automated, how quickly, and at what scale. But history suggests that societies adapt to technological change faster than they adapt to changes in how people think.

The deeper risk is cognitive atrophy.

As AI systems increasingly decide what we read, recommend what we buy, summarize what we should know, and generate what we say, they subtly shift the locus of judgment away from humans. Over time, convenience replaces deliberation. Answers replace inquiry. Output replaces understanding.

None of this requires coercion. It happens because it is easier.

Incentives Drive Outcomes, Not Intent

This dynamic is not the result of conspiracy or malicious design. It is the predictable outcome of incentive structures.

In competitive markets, technologies that reduce friction and increase engagement tend to win. Systems that keep users consuming, clicking, and responding — rather than questioning or reflecting — are more scalable and more profitable. Over time, this favors tools optimized for speed, dependency, and emotional reaction, not depth or discernment.

A passive user is not a failure state of these systems. It is their most efficient one.

When Efficiency Undermines Judgment

In organizations, this shift often appears benign. AI tools promise to save time, automate routine tasks, and streamline decision-making. Used thoughtfully, they can. Used indiscriminately, they can erode something more valuable than efficiency: judgment.

Judgment is not the same as information. It is the ability to weigh context, challenge assumptions, and integrate human values into decisions. When AI systems provide confident answers without requiring users to engage with uncertainty, the skill of judgment weakens through disuse.

This is not a technological flaw. It is a design choice.

The Irony: AI Could Reverse the Trend

The irony is that AI itself could help reverse this dynamic.

The same technology that can be used to extract attention and reduce thinking could instead be designed to augment cognition — to help people reason more clearly, surface better questions, and explore tradeoffs rather than bypass them.

That requires a shift in design philosophy:

• From answer delivery to question sharpening

• From task replacement to capability expansion

• From engagement metrics to cognitive outcomes

These are not anti-market ideas. In fact, over the long term, they are pro-market. Economies driven by original thinking, strong judgment, and genuine innovation outperform those optimized for extraction and short-term efficiency.

A Leadership Choice, Not a Technological One

This moment represents a fork in the road for leaders.

One path treats AI primarily as an extraction engine — maximizing speed, output, and dependency. The other treats it as an infrastructure for human capability — supporting thinking, learning, and better decision-making.

The difference is not in the underlying technology. It is in what organizations choose to optimize for.

The most important question, then, is not whether AI is good or bad.

It is what we are letting happen to ourselves.
